Whilst my focus has been on supporting children and young people, I have experience of working therapeutically with adults for their own emotional difficulties as well as those relating to parenting and coping with concerns about their children, so do not hesitate to contact me for a further discussion about your needs.

What interventions do I provide?

There are different forms or therapy recommended for different presenting problems. Psychologists use guidelines produced by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) to guide our choice of intervention, but I also consider what approach will best suit the individual client. You might not know what therapy will work best for you, but we can discuss how the approaches vary and plan any intervention in collaboration. Further details on NICE recommended therapies can be provided to help inform decision making. Some of the approaches I have training in are listed below.

  • Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT)

  • Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)

  • Systemic family therapy

  • Mindfulness

  • Narrative therapy

  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

  • Compassion focused therapy (CFT)

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

working with other agencies

As well as individual therapy, I have provided consultation and supervision to groups of school staff, including house parents, matrons, nurses, teachers and those delivering pastoral support.

This may be part of the intervention package I offer to families, in which small groups of school staff have been provided with consultation and guidance regarding the support and management of a specific child. This will always be delivered with consent of the child and family and only involve the most relevant individuals to the particular child.

At other times, consultation has been requested and funded by the school to support the staff in understanding and supporting the mental health of the students they teach. Teaching staff are experiencing greater expectations to be able to recognise emotional difficulties in children and to know how to intervene appropriately. My consultation sessions involve psycho-education on particular mental health presentations to help staff in supporting children within an academic setting. My consultation and supervision sessions will also help staff to think about understanding emotional problems without pathologising the child, when to seek more support and intervention for a specific child, and importantly how to manage the impact on themselves when working with children’s mental health needs.

Please note, I do not offer assessment of Autism Spectrum Condition in children or adults. However I do work within a network of Clinical Psychologists across Sussex, amongst whom are clinicians that are able to offer these assessments.
